Birmingham; Caravan Capital of the UK
England’s second city of Birmingham and the traditional west coast seaside resort of Southport are unlikely bedfellows but newly released research by the The Caravan Club reveals they are inextricably linked.
Birmingham has been crowned the caravan capital of the UK as statistics show the west midlands city has more caravans and motorhomes per head of population than anywhere else in the UK.
Yet, if Birmingham can legitimately claim to the spiritual home of the caravaner, Southport is equally justified in claiming to be the number one choice for a holiday. In fact The Caravan Club report reveals the north-west coastal town is the most popular destination in the UK for caravan and motorhome owners.
With over 500,000 touring caravans and more than 200,000 motorhomes in the UK, caravan holidays, or staycations as they have now been dubbed, are more popular than ever before with 2015 recording a 14% increase in the number of caravan holidays compared to the previous year.
Other statistics in The Caravan Club’s report reveal nearly £2 billion is spent annually on caravan holidays across the UK with over 50 million nights being spent in a caravan each year.
