Why campers love it here
About this site
Gear Farm Camping is an off-grid, family-run campsite on a working organic farm at St Martin, near Helston on Cornwall's Lizard Peninsula, a short hop from the quiet creeks of the Helford River. The farm has welcomed campers for nearly 30 years and keeps things deliberately simple: roomy pitches in open farmland, sea views, dark skies and not a single electric hook-up. Mawgan Stores is 1.2 miles away for essentials, Helston's supermarkets (Sainsbury's, Tesco and Lidl) sit within 6.3 miles, and the Shipwrights Arms at Helford Passage is a 4.9 mile drive. Tents and campervans suit the site best, and anyone wanting hook-ups, wifi or evening entertainment should book elsewhere. Facilities cover hot showers, flushing toilets, washing-up areas and solar-powered lighting, dogs stay for £1 a night, and Gear Farm pitches the whole experience around tents, firepits and starry nights. Campers on Tripadvisor rate it 4.9 out of 5, with the peace, the spotless facilities and the farm's pasties drawing repeat praise. Days out are easily sorted: Trebah and Glendurgan gardens, the Cornish Seal Sanctuary at Gweek, the underground passages of Halliggye Fogou and Kynance Cove all make the list. The 2026 season is short and sweet, running 13 July to 31 August, with adults from £13 a night, children from £5 and booking through the site's online system.
