Gumber Camping Barn And Campsite National Trust

Gumber Camping Barn and Campsite is a remote bothy and camping ground on the National Trust's Slindon Estate, reached only on foot from a car park two miles away at Bignor Hill or Northwood. It sits deep in the South Downs National Park near Arundel, West Sussex, just off the South Downs Way, on a working sheep farm where the flint barn, known locally as Gumber Bothy, provides simple dorm accommodation alongside the campsite. No vehicles are allowed anywhere near the pitches, so Gumber is camping for walkers, cyclists and horse riders happy to carry their kit rather than drive it in. There is no electricity, so bring a torch, but you do get a communal kitchen with two ovens, hot showers, toilets, a barbecue area and a designated campfire spot with firewood for sale. The site sits within the South Downs Dark Sky Reserve, so stargazing away from artificial light is one of the real draws, along with deer, hares and birds of prey seen regularly around the fields. Dogs are not permitted. This West Sussex bothy and campsite opens from 1 March to 31 October each year, and bookings and prices are handled through the current operator's own site rather than the National Trust's general holidays pages.
