About this site

YHA Penzance is a hostel campsite in the grounds of Castle Horneck, a Georgian mansion on the western edge of Penzance in west Cornwall, with tent pitches and six bell tents on a south-facing green looking across Mount's Bay. The site sits just over a mile from Penzance town centre (an easy walk down, a steady uphill haul back), with St Michael's Mount at Marazion about 4 miles east and Land's End and the Minack Theatre both within 9 miles. Camping is tents only and sold per person, so it suits backpackers, cyclists and South West Coast Path walkers rather than anyone towing: caravans and campervans are not accepted, and no electric hook-ups are advertised. The bell tents (four standard, two premium with a woodburner) sleep four to five on futon beds from Easter to the end of September. What lifts YHA Penzance above a basic field is the mansion itself: campers use the cafe bar, self-catering kitchen, laundry and games room, while the campsite has its own washroom with a mini-kitchen, four toilets and two showers. Dogs camp free in your own tent (£5 a night in bell tents), BBQs are available to hire, and campfires are banned. The hostel opens year round, with camping priced per person from £10 a night through YHA's booking system.

Good to know

Are dogs allowed at YHA Penzance?
Yes, dogs camp free on the campsite when you bring your own tent, and the bell tents take dogs for £5 a night. Dogs are not allowed inside the hostel building itself, with assistance dogs the only exception, so the cafe bar and kitchen are out of bounds for pets.
Are campfires allowed at YHA Penzance?
No, campfires are strictly prohibited anywhere on the site. BBQs are the way to go instead: the hostel hires out barbecues (bring your own charcoal) and disposable BBQs are permitted, and quiet time runs on the campsite from 10.30pm to 7.30am.
Can I bring a caravan or campervan to YHA Penzance?
No, the campsite takes tents only and is not suitable for caravans, campervans or motorhomes. Pitches sit on a level south-facing green in the mansion grounds, camping is sold per person rather than per pitch, so solo travellers only pay for themselves.
How much does camping at YHA Penzance cost?
Camping is priced per person rather than per pitch, with rates from £10 a night quoted through YHA's online booking system. Bell tents are booked per unit, and if the weather turns, dorm beds start from £14 and private rooms from £25 in the hostel itself.
When is YHA Penzance open?
The hostel is open all year, and bookings are taken up to three months in advance. The six bell tents run from Easter to the end of September, and group bookings are available on weekdays from March to October each year.
How far is YHA Penzance from the beach and town centre?
Penzance town centre and seafront are just over a mile away, an easy downhill walk with a steady climb back up to Castle Horneck. St Michael's Mount at Marazion is about 4 miles east, and the beaches at Sennen Cove and Porthcurno are within a 9-mile drive.
