About this site

Approach Farm Caravan Site is the Gowthorpe family's small touring site on their working arable and beef farm at Escrick, 7 miles south of York, and the family has run it for more than 25 years. The site occupies 1.25 acres of weekly mown, free draining grass half a mile north of Riccall, whose village shops include a Budgens, a deli, two pubs and an Italian restaurant; a bus stop 500 metres away runs regular services into York and Selby, and the flat, traffic free Sustrans cycle path from Riccall makes for a brilliant ride into the city. The 16 grass pitches all come with electric hook up and stand taps close by, suiting caravans and motorhomes best; small tents are priced on non electric pitches, but facilities amount to a toilet and washbasin with no showers, so campers who need a shower block should pick another site. It is a quiet, all ages sort of place with the odd bit of farmyard noise, dogs welcome on leads, farm tracks to stroll, and Olivia's Tearoom and the Three Hagges Woodmeadow within walking distance. Pitches for two at Approach Farm cost from £22 a night including electric, booked by phone or email.

Good to know

Are dogs allowed at Approach Farm Caravan Site?
Yes, dogs are welcome as long as they stay on a lead around the site. Visitors are encouraged to use the farm tracks around the working arable and beef farm to exercise their dogs, and Riccall village and the banks of the River Ouse offer longer walks close by.
Does Approach Farm Caravan Site have showers?
No, the facilities are deliberately simple: there is a toilet with a washbasin, plus stand taps around the grass pitches, but no shower block. Most guests arrive in caravans or motorhomes with their own washing facilities on board, and that is who the site suits best.
How much does a night at Approach Farm Caravan Site cost?
Pitches for up to two people cost from £22 a night including electric, rising to £24 a night on bank holidays with a three night minimum stay. Extra people over three years old pay £1 a night, awnings and gazebos cost £1, and a non electric caravan or tent pitch is £15.
Can I visit York easily from Approach Farm Caravan Site?
Yes, the site is 7 miles south of York, and a bus stop 500 metres away is served by regular buses into both York and Selby. Cyclists can join the flat, traffic free Sustrans York to Selby path at Riccall, half a mile from the site, for a safe ride into the city.
Does Approach Farm Caravan Site take tents?
Yes, in a limited way: the price list includes a £15 non electric caravan or tent rate and pup tents pitched beside a caravan at £3 a night. The site is run primarily for caravans and motorhomes though, so contact the owners before turning up with a larger tent.
Does Approach Farm Caravan Site have electric hook-ups?
Yes, all 16 pitches on the 1.25 acre grass site come with electric hook up, and electricity is included in the £22 nightly rate for two people. Water stand taps are dotted around the site, and cheaper non electric pitches are available at £15 a night.
