About this site

Mallinson's Woodland Retreat, known to many returning guests as Crafty Camping, is an adults-only luxury treehouse retreat set in a West Dorset woodland near Holditch, close to where Dorset, Devon and Somerset meet. The woodland lies within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, about 10 miles from the coastal town of Lyme Regis and 16 miles from Bridport, with Forde Abbey and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's River Cottage nearby. There are three RIBA award-winning treehouses to choose from (the Woodsman's, Dazzle and Pinwheel), each a self-contained space for two adults with a private deck, William Holland hot tub, en suite flushing loo and wood-fired pizza oven. Stays are self-catering, the minimum age is 18 and there are no group bookings, so this is a grown-ups' getaway rather than a family site or a place for tents and caravans. Dogs cannot be accommodated because of the surrounding woodland wildlife and livestock. What stands out is the hand-built craftsmanship, the deliberate quiet (guests are asked to leave portable speakers at home) and soaking in a hot tub under the trees and stars. The treehouses are open all year. Prices start from £590 for a two-night midweek stay in the Pinwheel or Dazzle treehouse in low season, with the Woodsman's Treehouse from £495 a night.

Good to know

Is Mallinson's Woodland Retreat (Crafty Camping) adults only?
Yes, the minimum age is 18 and it is a grown-ups only retreat with no children accommodated. Each treehouse sleeps two adults in a kingsize bed, and there are no group bookings, so it works best as a quiet couples' escape rather than a family holiday.
Are dogs allowed?
No, dogs cannot stay because of the woodland wildlife and the livestock in the surrounding fields. If you are travelling with a dog you would need to arrange separate care, as pets are not permitted anywhere in the treehouses or the woodland retreat itself.
Can I pitch a tent or bring a caravan?
No, this is treehouse glamping rather than a touring or tent campsite. Guests stay in one of three self-contained luxury treehouses, each with a hot tub, en suite and wood-fired pizza oven, so there are no grass pitches, hook-ups or caravan spaces on site.
Does each treehouse have a hot tub?
Yes, every treehouse has its own private William Holland hot tub on a private deck, along with an en suite flushing loo and a wood-fired pizza oven. The treehouses are self-catering, and guests are encouraged to switch off, with no TV expected in the woodland.
How much does it cost to stay?
Prices start from £590 for a two-night midweek stay in the Pinwheel or Dazzle treehouse in low season, working out cheaper per night on longer stays. The Woodsman's Treehouse is priced from £495 a night. Full prices are shown on the retreat's own availability calendar.
Is it open all year?
Yes, the treehouses are open all year round, including winter and a Christmas season. Changeover days are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, with a self check-in and check-out system so guests can arrive and leave independently whenever suits them within the booking.
