About this site

Set across three sheltered, landscaped terraces in the south east corner of the North York Moors National Park, Golden Square Caravan and Camping Park is a 5 star family park near Helmsley with panoramic views over farm, forest and moorland. The park sits at Oswaldkirk in North Yorkshire, close to Ampleforth, with Helmsley's market square a short drive away and York 22 miles south. Touring caravans, motorhomes, campervans and tents all get a choice of pitches: grass, hardstanding, screened individual spots, Astroturf tent pitches and all service pitches with water, drainage, TV hook-up and a picnic table, with family areas near the playground and quieter corners for those after peace. Note that the statics are privately owned with no hire fleet, groups are capped at three units, and open fires are banned (raised charcoal barbecues are fine). Children are properly catered for with two outdoor play areas, an indoor games room, crazy golf and a football field, and the park has added a brand new indoor padel court, an on site shop and off licence, and a dog exercise field for the maximum two dogs per pitch. Awards include AA 5 Gold Pennants and a David Bellamy gold conservation award. Golden Square is open from 1 March to 31 October, with standard pitches from £30.50 a night including electric hook-up and hiker or cyclist pitches from £12.

Good site, very hilly in parts if you have mobility problems. Quiet more flat part for easy access to toilet/ showers behind reception plots 11,12, 13. Staff very friendly and helpful. Shop on site very good. 10 minute drive to Helmsley, lovely village.

Top tip: Plot 2 Fully long walk to toilet/ showers if you have mobility problems

Good to know

Are dogs allowed at Golden Square Caravan and Camping Park?
Yes, up to two dogs per unit are welcome at £2 per dog per night, provided they are not a dangerous breed. Dogs must stay on short leads, never be left unattended and are not allowed in the play areas. A dedicated dog exercise field and woodland walks are on site.
Are campfires allowed at Golden Square Caravan and Camping Park?
No, open fires are not permitted anywhere on the park and burning wood is banned. Charcoal barbecues are allowed until 9.30pm as long as they are raised off the ground so the grass is not scorched. Gazebos are restricted to non-electric pitches, with no event shelters.
How much does a pitch at Golden Square Caravan and Camping Park cost?
Standard pitches start from £30.50 a night in low season, including electric hook-up, one car and two occupants. All service pitches start from £38.50, hiker and cyclist pitches from £12, and non-electric pitches knock £2 off. Dogs cost £2 and extra adults £6 per night.
When is Golden Square Caravan and Camping Park open?
The park is open from 1 March to 31 October each year. A two night minimum stay applies, with longer minimums over bank holidays. Low season offers include £3 off per night on Sunday to Wednesday stays of three nights or more, plus seven nights for the price of six.
Can I camp in a tent at Golden Square Caravan and Camping Park?
Yes, tents, trailer tents, folding campers and roof tents are all welcome, with grass, Astroturf and screened pitches available with or without electric hook-up. The ground is rocky beneath the surface, so pack rock pegs, and bring a proper tent hook-up lead if you book an electric pitch.
Is Golden Square Caravan and Camping Park inside the North York Moors National Park?
Yes, the park sits in the national park's south east corner at Oswaldkirk, with views towards the moors. Helmsley and Ampleforth are close by and York is 22 miles away. Towing arrivals should follow the signed caravan route rather than sat nav, which wrongly suggests the steep A170.
