About this site

Smithy Fields Camping is a small adults only campsite in the village of Alstonefield, deep in the White Peak between Dovedale and the Manifold Valley. The site sits just off the A515 that links the market towns of Ashbourne and Buxton, and it keeps things quiet and low key: different sized grass pitches, toilets, hot showers and a chemical disposal point, with no groups taken so the calm is protected. Alongside camping, caravan and campervan pitches, Smithy Fields has bell tents and two shepherds huts, Bertie's Hut and Bailey's View Hut, if you fancy glamping instead. What makes the spot is the walking on your doorstep. The village pub, The George, is a stone's throw across the green, with three more pubs within about 3 miles, and footpaths lead straight out to the Dovedale stepping stones, Wolfscote Dale, Thor's Cave and the Tissington Trail. This suits couples and quiet campers rather than families, given the adults only rule, and Ashbourne lies a short drive south for shops and supplies. Larger caravans and motorhomes are best routed in via Hartington and Hulme End, as the direct village lanes are narrow. Smithy Fields Camping opens from March to the end of October, and pitches and huts are booked through the site's online booking system.

Good to know

Is Smithy Fields adults only?
Yes, Smithy Fields is a small adults only campsite that does not take groups, which keeps the atmosphere quiet and relaxed. It suits couples and individual campers looking for a peaceful base rather than families with children or larger party bookings.
Does Smithy Fields offer glamping?
Yes, as well as grass pitches for tents, caravans and campervans, there are bell tents and two shepherds huts, Bertie's Hut and Bailey's View Hut. These give you a glamping option with more comfort while keeping the same quiet village setting.
How close is the campsite to Dovedale and the pub?
The George pub sits just across the village green in Alstonefield, with three more pubs within about 3 miles. Footpaths lead straight from the village to Dovedale, Wolfscote Dale, Thor's Cave and the Tissington Trail for walking and cycling, so you can leave the car behind for most days out.
What facilities are on site?
Smithy Fields keeps things simple with different sized grass pitches, toilets, hot showers and a chemical disposal point. It is a quiet, small site rather than a large park, so there is no bar or shop, but the village pub is only a short walk away.
When is Smithy Fields open, and how do I get there with a caravan?
The campsite opens from March to the end of October. If you are towing a larger caravan or motorhome, approach via Hartington and Hulme End rather than the narrow direct lanes into Alstonefield, following the signs to the site from the village green.
