About this site

South Town Farm Campsite is a small tents only micro campsite on a working conservation farm at Loxhore near Barnstaple in North Devon, set on the National Trust's Arlington Estate. There are just ten grass pitches spread over two fields, so it stays genuinely quiet, and the site sits on the edge of Exmoor National Park with North Devon's main beaches under a 30 minute drive away. It is deliberately back to basics and off grid, with a car free camping field, eco compost toilets, a gas heated shower with warm water and a covered washing up area. You leave the car in the car park and wheel your kit down by barrow to a flat, mown pitch with views across the countryside. Fire pits are supplied free and logs are sold on site, so campfire evenings and stargazing are part of the appeal. It suits families and couples after peace and dark skies, but the farm grazes ewes and lambs on the camp fields, so no dogs are allowed. Caravans and motorhomes are not catered for either, as this is a tents only site. South Town Farm runs from early May to early September, with pitches from £20 a night for up to two adults, booked online.

Good to know

Are dogs allowed at South Town Farm?
No, dogs are not allowed at South Town Farm. The owners graze ewes and lambs on the camp fields, so for the safety of the livestock the site stays dog free. Campers wanting a dog friendly site will need to look elsewhere in the area.
Can you have a campfire?
Yes, campfires are welcome and fire pits are supplied free for your stay. Only logs bought on site may be burned, and fires must be raised off the ground to protect the grass, since the fields are grazed by sheep in winter.
What are the facilities like?
South Town is beautifully basic and off grid, with a car free camping field, eco compost toilets, a gas heated shower with warm water and a covered washing up area. You leave your car in the car park and wheel kit to your pitch by barrow.
Does the site take caravans or motorhomes?
No, this is a tents only micro campsite with just ten grass pitches, so caravans and motorhomes are not catered for. The pitches are large, though, and two adults with two separate two man tents only need to book a single pitch.
When is it open and how much does it cost?
South Town Farm opens from early May to early September. Pitches are £20 a night for up to two adults, with additional adults £10, children aged 6 to 17 £4 and under sixes free. Solo campers arriving on foot or bike pay £10.
