About this site

Sweet Meadows & Wild Woods Country Holidays is a tiny, tucked-away campsite spread across nearly seven acres on the north-eastern edge of Dartmoor. You will find it at Clifford Bridge near Drewsteignton in north Devon, deep in the Teign Valley beside Fingle Woods, with forest walks a quarter of a mile away, Dunsford Woods nature reserve half a mile off, and wild swimming in the River Teign around three-quarters of a mile from the pitches. This is a place for tents and small camper vans only. The single-track lanes into the site cannot take large motorhomes, so leave the big rig at home and pack light. Pitches are informal, with plenty of niches to hide away in, and campfires are part of the deal. Families do well here thanks to the tree house, dens, swings, stream and open woodland, while walkers can reach Fingle Bridge and Castle Drogo on foot. Facilities are simple rather than luxurious, and booking ahead is strongly advised as space is limited. Bring binoculars and a torch, because near Drewsteignton the light pollution is low and the stargazing at Sweet Meadows is genuinely good.

Good to know

Can you have campfires at Sweet Meadows & Wild Woods?
Yes, campfires are welcome and are a big part of the experience here. The owners describe evenings spent around the fire with a barbecue and a glass of wine, so this is a proper campfire site rather than one where open flames are banned.
Is the site suitable for large motorhomes?
No, the narrow single-track lanes leading to Sweet Meadows cannot accommodate large motorhomes. The site suits tents and small camper vans only, so if you are travelling in a big motorhome you will need to look elsewhere on Dartmoor's edge.
Where exactly is Sweet Meadows & Wild Woods?
It sits at Clifford Bridge near Drewsteignton, on the north-eastern edge of Dartmoor in the Teign Valley, north Devon. Fingle Woods, Dunsford Woods nature reserve and the River Teign are all within walking distance of the pitches.
Is there wild swimming nearby?
Yes, the River Teign runs close to the site, with a good swimming pool about three-quarters of a mile from Clifford Bridge. Fingle Bridge, roughly three miles away, has deeper pools further upstream for keener wild swimmers.
Is the campsite good for children?
Yes, there is a tree house, dens, swings, a stream and open wild woods to explore, so children and adults alike can roam. It is an informal, natural site rather than one with formal play equipment or organised activities.
Do I need to book in advance?
Booking ahead is strongly advised because the site is small and space is limited. Pitches are informal with tucked-away niches, but the owners recommend reserving your spot rather than turning up on spec, especially in the warmer months.
