South of the Forest of Bowland, the site is wonderfully peaceful and is close enough to the coast to enjoy a day trip. Clitheroe town is a mile-and-a-half away. A 12th century Norman keep overlooks the town and the museum holds the North West Sound Archive of 9,000 recordings made in the area. Manchester is a train ride away, with excellent shopping facilities and several interesting museums, including the Imperial War Museum North. The Forest of Bowland offers a wide range of unspoilt landscapes to explore. The Ribble Valley Sculpture Trail exhibits the work of local artists. Knowsley Safari Park is home to lions, tigers and a baboon jungle. The River Ribble borders the site, with good walks. Ask at reception for information on day permits for fishing.
