Camping use is slightly different from the hunter or gamekeeper use these cameras were built for. You are setting up for a night or two, not a season, so speed of setup, battery life and a night mode that does not betray the camera all matter more than raw resolution.

Resolution and image quality

Ignore most of the megapixel claim on the front of the box. Many trail cameras use a small five to eight megapixel sensor and then interpolate the file up to a headline 20, 32 or even 48MP, which adds file size rather than real detail. A camera with a true 12 to 24MP sensor and clean 1080p video will identify any British animal you are likely to see, from a hedgehog to a roe deer.

For wildlife, video usually beats stills because behaviour tells you more than a single frame. A 20 to 30 second clip at 1080p is the sweet spot. Save the 4K setting for when the camera is close and the light is good, because it drains the battery and fills the card fast.

Trigger speed and detection range

Trigger speed is the single most important figure, and you want it under 0.5 seconds. It measures the gap between the sensor detecting movement and the camera taking the first frame. Night vision: no-glow versus low-glow

Most British wildlife worth filming is nocturnal or crepuscular, so night performance is where cameras earn their money. The choice comes down to the infrared LED wavelength, and it genuinely matters when you are near a tent.

  • No-glow (940nm). The flash is completely invisible to people and animals. It will not spook a nervous fox, and it will not give away where the camera is hidden, which is the sensible choice on a shared campsite. The trade-off is a slightly shorter, slightly darker night image.
  • Low-glow (850nm). Brighter, longer night range and crisper images, but the LEDs give off a faint red glow when they fire. That glow is easy to spot in the dark and can unsettle wary animals.

For camping, no-glow wins almost every time. You are near people and skittish wildlife, and a camera nobody notices is a camera nobody moves.

Weatherproofing and battery life

Look for IP66 as a minimum. The IP rating has two digits: the first is dust protection and the second is water. The law and etiquette: do not film people

Point the camera at wildlife, never at people. On your own private land a trail camera is your business, but the moment it captures footage beyond your own space, such as other pitches, shared paths, the toilet block or a play area, UK data protection law can apply, exactly as it does for a home CCTV camera that overlooks a neighbour or a pavement.
