About this site

Campfires are permitted at Chiplands Certificated Site, and for a good number of its campers that single fact is the reason to come. The pitch is grass at Church Knowle on Dorset's Isle of Purbeck, out on the Tyneham road roughly 2.5 miles from Corfe Castle, and it is run on back to basics lines by the Camping and Caravanning Club. Certificated Site rules mean five caravans or motorhomes at most, plus tents, with Club membership needed to book. Electric hook up does not exist here, the pitches being grass only, and the facilities amount to toilets and wash basins, so showers and an on site shop are things to arrange elsewhere. Dogs are welcome. Setting is what Chiplands trades on: it lies beyond the village on the lane heading for Kimmeridge and Tyneham, the Purbeck Ridgeway is walkable straight from the gate, and The New Inn at Church Knowle is a short stroll off. Reckon on seven minutes in the car to Corfe Castle village and twenty or so to Swanage, so a car earns its keep in this part of Dorset. Opening runs April to the end of October, and booking goes through the site manager rather than any online system.

Good to know

Are campfires allowed at Chiplands?
Yes, you can have a traditional campfire at this site, which is unusual on the Isle of Purbeck and is a big part of why people book it. Chiplands is otherwise a back to basics field, so bring your own wood and expect no on site shop.
Are dogs allowed at Chiplands Certificated Site?
Yes, Chiplands is dog friendly. The site sits in open Purbeck countryside beyond Church Knowle, with the Purbeck Ridgeway and the lanes towards Kimmeridge and Tyneham on the doorstep, so there is a lot of walking straight from the campsite without needing the car.
Is there electric hook up at Chiplands?
No, the pitches are grass only with no electric hook up. Facilities run to toilets and wash basins, and no showers are listed, so this suits campers who are happy going back to basics rather than anyone needing power for a fridge or a heater.
Do I need to be a Camping and Caravanning Club member to stay at Chiplands?
Yes, Chiplands Certificated Site is a Camping and Caravanning Club CS, so it is member only. Certificated Sites take up to five caravans or motorhomes and up to ten tents at a time, which is what keeps this Dorset field small, quiet and rural.
When is Chiplands Campsite open?
Chiplands opens every year from April to the end of October. There is no online booking system, so you reserve a space by calling the site manager or by contacting the campsite through its Facebook page rather than through the Club's own booking engine.
How far is Chiplands from Corfe Castle?
The site is about 2.5 miles from Corfe Castle, roughly a seven minute drive from the village and its amenities, and about twenty minutes from Swanage. Church Knowle and its pub, The New Inn, are a short walk away, so a car is useful but not essential.
