Pitch up at Kitts Campsite and you are camping among three meadows surrounded by mature Sussex woodland at Scaynes Hill in West Sussex, a couple of miles from Sheffield Park and about three miles from Haywards Heath. The site, formerly known as Kitts Cottage Campsite and Kitts Camp, has been through a rebrand but keeps the same rustic, low-impact approach: bring a tent or camper van of any size, or book one of the bell tents if you would rather arrive to a made-up bed. A field barn with flushing toilets, hot showers and a covered washing-up area covers the basics, and a pizza truck often turns up on Friday nights in the busier months, with coffee and breakfast vans over weekends. Kitts suits campers who want simple pleasures such as a rope swing, a badminton net and proper Sussex footpaths rather than an activity-packed holiday park, and campfires are allowed if you fancy sitting out after dark. Dogs are welcome, and the site is geared up for families as much as couples after a quiet weekend. The Sloop pub is a ten minute walk away for an evening meal without cooking. Glamping bell tents are booked from £95 a night, with a minimum two night stay over bank holidays.
